Early 20th Century painting on canvas board with a charmingly painted frame to match - a rare piece of genuine Swedish rural folk art. The scene depicted is a classical village landscape with red painted houses and villagers in tradtitional costume, typical of the Swedish countryside in the beginning of the 20th century.

This style of Nordic art is also known as 'Allmoge', but what does 'Allmoge' mean? When we Swedes think allmoge, we think of old wooden furniture and valley paintings, folk songs and handicrafts, wood stoves and timbered cottages, home-baked bread and kams. So what do all these things have in common? Well, it's by people, born out of the lives and daily struggles of ordinary people for bread and meaning in life.
And if we look at the word in itself, the original meaning of 'Allmoge' is 'All allowed' in Old Swedish - All allowed, the whole people.

The expression "the commoners" also appears in old sources, and then it meant the lower classes, the taxpaying classes as opposed to the more privileged classes. As the urban population formed a bourgeoisie, "allmogen" became more and more associated with the rural population, the peasants and crofters, who accounted for the vast majority of Sweden's population until the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, these folk art pieces can be found here and there, but the more spectcular ones are rarely seen outside Swedish museums and certain antique stores. In a few instances, research has identified the painter or the school responsible for certain paintings or textile work, but most of them come to us a anonymous gifts from the past. And we are most grateful.
