Stoneware Bowl

A rare stoneware bowl by Patrick Nordström, thrown at his own workshop, ISLE, in Denmark. The wide, shallow form is covered in a rich brown and beige glaze with small hints of teal, and soft drips down the walls. The expressive glaze is a hallmark of Nordström's artistry, developed over decades of experimentation.

The bowl is marked with Nordström's monogram ('P' and 'N' intertwined) along with 'ISLE' (now Islev), a Copenhagen suburb where Nordström had his workshop, and is dated 1925.

About the Artist
Patrick Nordström (1870–1929) was a Swedish-born ceramicist, renowned as one of the most influential figures in early 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics for his pioneering development of glazing techniques and his exploration of Asian forms and aesthetics. He returned to Denmark in 1900 and worked for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, where he established its production of stoneware, before returning to his own studio in Islev in 1922, where he continued working until his passing in 1929. His work laid the foundation for what became known as the modern Danish style of ceramics.
