This lively work of Swedish Modernist design is the ‘Igelkott’ (‘Hedgehog’) vase by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, produced between 1936-1948.
The vase is made out of stoneware chamotte and glazed in glossy white. Handworked, the rugged yet polished décor makes this an exceptionally tactile piece and the highly textured surface with the glossily glazed décor is a fabulous juxtaposition. Stilistically timeless and contemporary, this work is an outstanding example of Scandinavian mid-century Modern design.
- Measurements: Height 12 cm
- Markings: Deep stamped ’Rörstrand, Sverige, Chamotte, Nylund’
- Condition: In excellent vintage condition. One chipped knot detected, which unfortunately is very common with these vases, but it’s nearly invicible and was more or less impossible to catch on camera.

More on the Hedgehog series
Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) designed many classics for the Swedish ceramic factory Rörstrand. Some of the most well-known objects are the hedgehog vases with swelling forms, strong colors, and rough surfaces. They were part of the larger Chamott (Chamotte) series from 1936 and 1948.
The vases came in three models with varying sizes and five standard colors. This vase, model ’AI’, is the smallest one in the series.
