A small whimsical Art Deco sculpture in brass, depicting a stylized rider seated atop a horse. Unmarked, attributed to Karl Hagenauer for Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien, Austria, 1930s. Rendered as a flat silhouette with fine linear detailing, the piece is characteristic of Hagenauer's playful figurative style.
About the Maker
Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien was a Viennese workshop founded in 1898 by goldsmith Carl Hagenauer. His son Karl Hagenauer (1898–1956) trained at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad, creating designs for the Wiener Werkstätte before joining the family firm in 1919 and eventually becoming its principal designer. Working chiefly in brass, he developed a distinctive Art Deco style, producing both functional objects and small-scale sculptures of stylized animals and figures. His work gained wide recognition internationally, including at the 1925 Paris "Exposition des Arts Décoratifs," and found a strong American following through New York gallerist Rena Rosenthal.
